A Year Will Pass By Anyway

by rbenns on January 17, 2010

Anthony Robbins once said “If you would do the things that others are unwilling to do for one year that you could live the life that others only dream about.”  This statement has always intrigued me because its only asking for a one year commitment. However, I’ve since learned that a year is quite a long time to commit to anything.  The moment you commit to anything everything unlike the commitment shows up in the room to test your level of commitment to that thing.  In my experience a 90 day commitment is difficult to maintain.  If you don’t believe me then try it.

The other thing that I’ve learned is that if you are able to commit and eliminate all of the distractions you will not recognize your life one year later.  Do you remember the movie Muhammad Ali starring Will Smith?  If you do then I’m sure you’ll agree that Will really channeled the persona of Ali.  You only saw the finished product and what you may not know is that Will trained for one year before shooting one scene of that movie.  He did boxing training six to seven hours a day, physical training, Islamic studies, and dialect training.  He also had sessions with a neurobiologist who explained to him the inter workings of the human brain and how to create neuron passages.  He would sit in a dark room and watch a loop of Ali’s moves a half hour before he went to bed and then 15 minutes when he woke up in the morning.

Why do I share all of this with you?  Because I’d like to impress upon you just how much more you can become in a year if you’re focused.  I’d like for you to realize how deep you can go in any area that interests you with focused intensity.  It will involve you giving up a few things but it will be so worth it.  Too many of you are putting your dreams on hold for that one day that is never coming.  I’m only asking for a 365 day commitment from you.  I’m ready to see you soar.  So far what are you doing differently this year from what you did last year?  When are you going to stop living other people’s dreams and start living your own?

What are you giving back to God?  Where’s your reverence for life?  Are your dreams buried in some box that sits in your closet?  Are you tired of that dead end job that just helps you eke out a meager existence?  Are you tired of telling your children that you can afford a certain thing?  Are you tired of apologizing for what you’ve made of your life?  Whether you do or don’t do anything significant a year will pass by anyway.

That’s my spin on it.
