Are You A Wage Slave?

by rbenns on September 21, 2009

Wage SlaveChances are you’ve never heard of such a term as “wage slave” before.  Therefore, I think it might be a good idea to define exactly what I mean when I use the phrase.  By the way you will not find this definition in the dictionary but you will definitely recognize its meaning once I define it.

Without further ado a wage slave is person who has relinquished their entire earning ability to wages.  It doesn’t matter if this person gets paid a salary or earns their pittance by the hour.

I’m certainly not frowning upon anyone who endeavors to be a wage slave, however I think the idea is great cause for discussion.  Wage slavery can have its benefits if one uses it as a spring board for learning, growing and eventually abandoning the job altogether.  The most damaging aspect of wage slavery is not what happens outwardly but what actually occurs inside the mind of a wage slave.

I think if you were to talk to most wage slaves and asked them this simple question, “Do you enjoy what you are currently doing for a living?”, most would say “NO.”

Here’s the follow up question to the above, “Then why do you continue to do it?

Here’s another follow up question to ask, “What are your plans so that you can quit doing what you have clearly identified is not working for you?”

You see there is something totally amiss in the manner in which we have been trained to earn a living in this country.  Wage slaves trade something that is infinite (MONEY) for something that is finite (TIME).

Why do wage slaves do it?  They do it for the money, the status, and for the security.  Have you ever been stuck in traffic with wage slavers? They are some of the most depressing people to look at.  I believe the whole phenomenon of “road rage” was created by a wage slave.

Here are a few characteristics of a wage slave.  They often complain about their jobs to their family, friends and colleagues.   Their only solace in life is a cigarette, a stiff drink or some reality TV show.  The job sucks the little energy they do have which prevents them from ever pursuing anything else.  Here’s the real kicker, they even complain when they get fired or laid off on a job they didn’t like in the first place.  If they manage to keep their job in these “troubled times” they merely wait for retirement to start living their lives.

You all know the protocol.  You go to school and make sure you get good grades.  Next, you go and look for a good high paying job.  You get heavily debted with new cars and a hefty mortgage.  You try to keep up with other wage slavers and then die.  You live a life of total mediocrity never able to amass no more than a flicker for a flame.

Do you really have to live this way? How do you begin to steal away from a job that cares nothing about you?  How do you begin to fulfill your purpose in life?  You’ve got to create something of your own.  Each of you have talents to offer the world.  I’ll bet that when you get silent you immediately know what your talents are.  The problem is that too many of us are cowards to move forward in pursuit of our dreams.

This is not an easy path that I am suggesting you embark upon.  Very few people every embark upon the path and even fewer continue along when the roads get bumpy. (and they will get bumpy).  You have to be willing to not only rock the boat but tip it over.  You have to be willing to go out on a limb.  You must be willing to abandon social conditioning.  You must be willing to challenge long held beliefs that have kept you exactly where you are.  Most of you will read this post and become upset by my choice words and won’t do a damn thing.  There are a select few of you that will take on this challenge and make some significant happen in your life.

What is currently dying inside of you?  The goal of life is to awaken within the dream while you alive?  The goal of life is to live up to the mighty potential that we all possess inside.  Your job is robbing you of that can you see it?

Can you say, “I am the way, the peace, the knowledge, the light…follow me?”

That’s my spin on it.
