James Allen wrote this poem in 1902 and I have reproduced it here with a few comments of my own.
The Poem
Mind is the Master Power that molds and makes, And we are mind. And ever more we take the tool of thought, and shaping what we will, bring forth a thousand joys, or a thousand ills. We think in secret, and it comes to pass, environment, is but our looking glass.
The Breakdown
Mind is the Master Power. If you are familiar with a master key it supersedes all keys. It opens all locks. Thus your mind in the same way can unlock any doors that you desire if you will allow it to. Let you mind work for you because that is its purpose. Mind can unlock the darkness or the Light. Mind is irrespective of persons or circumstances.
The Mind has no preference. As James Allen states, your thoughts can bring forth a thousand Joys or a thousand Ills. So when you look outside of you and you see either joys or ills know that what you see is a result of your thoughts. You are the creator of your universe regardless of the fragrance you smell. If you don’t like the smell simply change your thoughts and a new bouquet will fill the room.
We think in secret means that this is an internal dialogue. All of your preparation is being done underground. By the time you see the physical manifestation of ‘what is’ you have done all the work in creating what you see. Your thoughts are only exposed to the rest of the world through physical objects, situations and circumstances.
Environment is but your looking glass. If you look in the mirror and don’t like what you see, you don’t break the mirror. How effective of a strategy would that be? How effective would it be to leave one mirror and go the next expecting to see something different? Change you and what you see in the mirror changes and you never have to touch the mirror. Your environment is but your looking glass.
That’s my spin on it.
