Two primary ways that we get attention is drama and respect. It seems that more of us choose the drama road because it’s seems to be quite easy to materialize. In marketing this is referred to as the “rubber neck effect”. The rubber neck effect is something that gets your attention because it’s usually filled with drama. It causes you to pay attention and the goal is to interrupt your normal flow of activities of what’s really important. Some examples are listed below.
- Michael Vick gets arrested for dog-fighting
- Michael Jackson allegedly molests another child
- Chris Brown bites Rihanna
- George Michael arrested for driving while drinking and driving again
- David Carradine naked body found hanging in a closet
- John Edwards fathers ex-mistress child
- Rick Pitino admits to sex
Drama gets you lots of page views. Drama gets people to talk about you. Drama gets you attention. Drama makes life a soap opera, the characters change but the drama is never ending.
Respect on the other hand is something entirely different. When I mention the word Obama what comes to mind? Even if you disagree with his political views and policies there is an overwhelming feeling of respect. Respect is a place of honor. When you respect someone you admire the excellence in them. With respect you still get the page views, people still talk about you, and you still get the attention of others but from entirely different perspective. Respect is heavenly while drama is like being in the gutter.
Drama is easy to create but respect is something that can only be earned over time by living your life absence of the drama. Drama and challenges are not the same thing. Respect does not mean challenge free.
If the drama is something that you choose to be known for then by all means create at. It’s easy. It’s simple. It’s can be created on demand. On the other hand if respect is something you’re seeking then know that it’s simple but not easy.
That’s my spin on it.
