I had the pleasure of listening to the wisdom of Byron Katie tonight at the Unity Church in Dallas. The best way for me to summarize the experience was to say that each one of her statements could be a 1,500 word post on this blog. The good thing that I left with is that this same wisdom exists in all of us if we would only question our thoughts.
Another thing I was reminded of is that L O V E is the P O W E R! You can go to her site and download all the material you need to do what she calls The Work for free. I thought I’d demonstrate for you how this works by giving you an example right here.
I am angry at Paul because he is so irresponsible, he doesn’t handle his business and he’s just a complete deadbeat of a man.
Now the work.
Bryon might say something like this..
“Honey is that true?”
Me
“Yes”
Byron
“Honey, can you absolutely know those things you say about Paul are true?”
Me
“No, I cannot absolutely know that those things are true.”
Byron
“How do feel about Paul when you think those thoughts? What goes on inside of you as you say or think those things about Paul?”
Me
“I want to go over to his house and burn it down. When I see him I want to grab him by his throat and choke him until his eyeballs pop out of his head. I feel angry, mad, seething, and vengeful.”
Byron
“How would you feel about Paul if you couldn’t think those thoughts? If you dropped your story about Paul how would you see Paul?”
Me
“I would see a frightened man trying to survive. I would see a man doing the best that he knew how to do to take care of his family. I would see a drowning man looking for a life raft. I would see a disguised version of myself.”
Byron
“Can you give me some turnarounds?”
Me
“I am irresponsible, I don’t handle my business and I am a deadbeat of a man when it comes to dealing with Paul”
“Paul is responsible, he handles his business in the best way he knows how.”
“There are many times I do not handle my business. There are many times when my actions are like a deadbeat. I can find so many occasions where I have been totally irresponsible.
Byron
“Rickey its good to know that. Next time, since you believe it is so easy for Paul to do why don’t you be the example. It looks like Paul has been a wonderful teacher for you. Remember, this is about your sanity not Paul’s.
