My world continues to crumble around me. My relationships are in shambles. My finances have taken a dive. My health is not up to par. My thinking is faulty. My spirituality has disappointed me time and time again. (just kidding)
How many times have you heard something similar to what I just wrote above? I’d say you’ve probably heard it dozens of times in the last few weeks alone. Well I’m about to shock your world with what I believe are some ultimate truths about life. An ultimate truth is one that cannot be refuted and if you choose to take on such a battle it will be to your own demise. So sit back and get ready to see how snuggly these truths fit into your world.
- Nothing in our world is real.
- Nothing in the world has meaning other than the meaning that we assign to it.
- Each of us is who we say we are, and our experiences are what we say they are.
Let’s dig a little deeper into each one of these truths. Nothing in our world is real. If you believe that something is real, how could you prove it? If you believe it’s real because you see it then how can you account explain that everyone sees the thing you are looking at a little bit different? If you say it’s real because you can taste it then how do you know what you’re tasting is the same thing that another is tasting. They may not be tasting anything at all. You can take each one of the five senses and refute any of the evidence that you uncover about something being real.
If you don’t assign it meaning how could it have meaning? Have you ever watched a football game where the temperature has fallen below zero and people are running around with their faces painted with no shirt on? If you’re not one who does this then you can see that both of you have defined two different meanings to what it means to be cold. If someone calls you ugly then you have the choice of assigning the meaning of a compliment, anger or indifference to their statement.
No experience has meaning except the meaning you give it. Some people call a business venture that didn’t succeed a failure while others see it as feedback. Who are you? Well you can decide to be the president of the United States or Bruno the wino. The choice is yours and you get to decide in each moment who you choose to be.
Now whether you agree or disagree with my position on ultimate truths is not really the point. The real value comes from imagining what your life would be like if you decided to live these truths. How would life on this planet change for you? Would it get better or worse? Would you prosper or decay? Would you expand or close? Test it and see.
You don’t have to live these truths either.
You can believe that the world is real. You can believe that the meaning of everything is decided by world conditions. You can believe that who you are is decided by another and the experiences that you have depends on what happens to you. It’s your choice.
That’s my spin on it.
