The Best Person Is A Myth

by rbenns on December 22, 2009

Few people understand what I’m about to share with you.  In fact, most people have it all backwards.  They go out seeking the best person rather than the right person.  I’m not just talking semantics here.  Sports is a great metaphor for this example.  How many teams do you know that have a superstar on their team yet they can not amass a championship.  Of course that superstar shines and gets all of his accolades but the team at large suffers.  The subtly here is that the best person is often the stumbling block keeping you from achieving your desired outcome.

This happens in relationships as well.  Men seek the finest and the most attractive girl yet together they can’t bust a grape with iron boots on.  Women seek that hunk of a guy who is drop dead gorgeous but he’s a wimp when it comes to financial stability and fidelity.

In all of this the right person to have on your team is waiting in the wings but you totally ignore them because they are not the best.  You fail to realize what it means to have cohesiveness on your team.  You fail to realize how important it is to have the right person rather than the best person.  Am I suggesting that you settle for less?  Quite the contrary.  I am telling you that your methodology for choosing who should be on your team is flawed.  The dream only happens with the right team which begins by having the right person not the best person.

Give me a group of the right people and I promise you the best people will be nothing but dust in the wind.

That’s my spin on it.
