What Language Do You Speak?

by rbenns on January 22, 2010

There’s only two basic ways of learning a language, one is immersion and the other is repetition.  Immersion is when you want to learn French you fly to France and you live among the French speaking people.  You immerse yourself in the culture, language and customs and you only speak that language.  You remain there until you speak French fluently.

Repetition on the other hand is a much slower process in that you may still speak your native language but you repeat French words, phrases and sentences until you learn the language.  This is often done by listening to an audio CD over and over or taking a continuing education class at a community college.  You could also learn via the repetition method by simply letting French play in the background while you perform other tasks.  This is how most of us learned to speak our native language.  We heard others repeat words, phrases and sentences over and over until we begin to speak the language.

Most us don’t know that we’re already bi-lingual.  Yes we speak another language but it is mostly an unconscious one.  We all speak this second language and it is the driving force in our lives.  What comes to your mind as I say these words?

Money
Family
Sex
Food
Weight
Economy
Job
Business
Wife
Husband
Smoking
Religion
Drinking
Abuse
Mother
Father

There’s no doubt that when you read each of the words above it evokes some sort of emotion within.  The emotion make work for you or against you depending on how you were programmed.  These thoughts, feelings and emotions make up the other language that you speak.  When I hear the word father I often think of the word abuse.  When I hear the word family I often think of the word dysfunctional.  When I hear the word money I often feel excitement.  Each of us have a programming language that dictates what we do and don’t do.  The second language that you speak is mostly on auto-pilot.  You either end up at a bar on Friday night or at home being a couch potato because of your programming language.

Where you are in life is simply based on the silent language that you speak to yourself.  What you say when you silently talk to yourself is responsible for 99.9% of your results.  You will never rise higher than your belief in yourself and your belief is formed by your programming language.  The sad thing is that most of your programming language was given to you by others meaning you did not originate it.  The other sad thing is that you rarely stop to question it.

Have you ever stopped to question a 30-year mortgage?
Have you ever stopped to question a 40 hour work week?
Have you ever stopped to question an 8 hour work day?
Have you ever stopped to question keeping kids home until their 18 then kicking them out?
Have you ever stopped to question a 4 year college degree?
Have you ever stopped to question being married to one person until death?
Have you ever stopped to question going to public school for 12 years?
Have you ever stopped to question paying interest on cars and credit cards?
Have you ever stopped to question the idea of a heaven and a hell?

Most of us just take what is shoved down our throat as status quo.  Unfortunately, most of the programming that was given to us at a very early age was quite lousy.  One program that my mom gave me was she always use to say “boy you’ve got book sense but you sure don’t have much commons sense.”  So when I grew up and I made poor decisions I’d just chalk it up to me not having any common sense as was programmed into my psyche at an early age.  I did this on automatic pilot because I was remaining true to that early programming.

These programs are subtle and the only way to know that they’re there is to start digging.  In order to know that they’re there you must go look for them.  This is not an easy process to go and dig up these mind snakes.  If you exercise the courage to do so you will notice some dramatic transformations in your life.

That’s my spin on it.
